Why did this happen?

In many cases, the garage door cable only comes off of the drums for a few reasons. Often, foreign objects get under the garage door that are not seen by the photo sensors on your garage door opener. Examples of this are often skateboards that are lower that the safety eyes, and car bumper which are higher than the sensors. These foreign objects cause slack in the door cables, and the cables come off of the drums as a result. Other times, improper maintenance of the garage door is the cause of the problem, and adjustment is needed. (To adjust garage door cables takes expertise in spring adjustment). Over time, garage door springs lose tension, and this will also cause slack in the cables, resulting in a breakdown.
